Middle School Founding Director of Literacy and Humanities

Angelica Otiti is an educator and instructional leader who believes that every student deserves to be seen, challenged, and supported. Over the past eleven years, she has served in multiple roles including Content Team Lead, Lead Teacher, Grade Team Lead, Director of Instruction, and Assistant Principal. Through each stage of her career, she has centered her work on the idea that learning happens best in spaces where curiosity, care, and high expectations coexist. As a classroom teacher, Angelica created environments that celebrated student voice, critical thinking, and identity. As a team lead, she cultivated collaboration and consistency, ensuring that teachers had the tools and confidence to meet the diverse needs of their students. As Director of Instruction, she coached educators to refine practice through data-driven instruction, culturally responsive pedagogy, and student-centered planning. In her role as Assistant Principal, Angelica guided schoolwide turnaround efforts that strengthened teaching, culture, and community. Her leadership supported measurable gains in student achievement, attendance, and engagement while fostering a sense of belonging among students and staff. She is known for her ability to build trust, inspire growth, and lead with empathy and vision. For Angelica, leadership is people work. I love the process of building relationships with students by trying to understand the interests, obstacles, and questions they engage with on a daily basis. Hi, my name is Raisa Hossain. As a proud hijabi woman, I believe that our individuality is our greatest strength and that belief shapes everything I do in the classroom. I hold a master’s certification in Childhood and Special Education and love creating a space where students feel seen, valued, and celebrated for who they are. In my classroom, I have a cartoon version of myself, a hijabi emoji sipping bubble tea, that reminds my students that representation matters and that joy belongs in learning. I remind them often that hurtful words aren’t ours to keep, but kindness always is.

My name is Johana Matute, and this is my fourth year teaching in a K–5 setting. I love to read thriller books and enjoy a cup of iced or hot coffee any time of the day! My passion for education began while helping raise my niece and nephews at the age of 9 and discovering the joy of being there to support someone’s growth. Growing up in Queens and attending public schools came with challenges. I often struggled to find my voice and participate in large groups. However, the encouragement and dedication of my teachers inspired me to pursue a career in education, where I could help young minds thrive and reach their fullest potential. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Childhood Education and a Master’s Degree in Literacy Education from Queens College. Two years after earning my master’s, I decided to further my education by pursuing a Bilingual Extension Certificate at Touro University. My teaching philosophy centers on the belief that every child has the right to an equitable and meaningful education. I strive to guide students not only academically but also in understanding values, responsibility, and self-confidence, hoping to make a lasting, positive impact on their lives. School Counselor

Melissa is a native New Yorker, born and raised in the Bronx. As a school counselor, she is passionate about helping students grow academically, socially, and emotionally in a supportive and inclusive environment. Melissa has trained as a counselor in various school settings including elementary, middle, and high school. In addition to her training as a counselor, Melissa also holds experience as a teacher’s assistant. Melissa holds a Master’s in School Counseling with a bilingual extension (Spanish/English) from Hunter College, a Bachelor’s in Psychology, and a NYS certification in School Counseling. In her free time, she enjoys reading, taking dance classes, and spending time with her family.

Middle School Founding Principal

Sylvia Danae Harris is a career educator with over 26 years of experience serving children from elementary through high school across Georgia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and currently New York City. She has held roles as a Teacher, Mentor Teacher, Instructional Coach, and most recently, Assistant Principal. Sylvia is honored to join the Elm Community Charter School Team as the Founding Middle School Principal.
Throughout her career, Danae has worked alongside fellow educators, families, and community stakeholders to nurture student bodies who are intelligent, industrious, trustworthy, and responsible. She believes in fostering friendships rooted in service and cultivating divergent thinkers who are prepared to lead reflective and meaningful lives.
Danae’s educational philosophy is grounded in the belief that educators have the power not only to shape minds but to touch hearts. She often reflects on the profound impact teachers have—not just on students, but on families, communities, and society at large. She writes, “Each of us can recall a teacher who changed the trajectory of our lives, helping us walk a little taller and live a little bolder.”
At Elm Community Charter Middle School, Sylvia envisions a vibrant learning community where students are empowered to become thoughtful leaders and compassionate citizens of Elmhurst and Corona. In her spare time, Danae enjoys spending time with her loving family, dancing, cooking, DIY home projects, and being outdoors surrounded by nature. She also enjoys making candles to support self-care practices.

I was born and raised in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and I’m proud to bring that energy and perspective to the Elm Community team. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from SUNY Cortland in 2019, where I focused on understanding cultures, perspectives, and the power of connection.

I see myself as empathetic, creative, and dedicated to creating a welcoming classroom where students feel supported and encouraged to grow. For me, teaching isn’t just about academics, it’s about helping students build confidence, curiosity, and resilience.

Outside of school, I love swimming, exploring different neighborhoods, practicing languages, and finding joy in the small adventures of everyday life.

Dawnisha Lane is a seasoned finance and accounting professional with deep expertise in nonprofit financial management, strategic planning, and operational systems design. Since 2016, she has served as a Finance Manager at Charter School Business Management (CSBM), where she leads high-stakes budgeting, oversees complex accounting operations, and ensures regulatory and audit compliance for a diverse portfolio of charter schools and nonprofit organizations.
Throughout her career, Dawnisha has implemented scalable finance and HR systems, streamlined reporting processes, and advised executive leadership teams on financial strategy and sustainability. Her experience uniquely positions her to support mission-driven organizations through fiscally responsible growth and operational excellence.
Dawnisha holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of California, Davis. She currently resides in Los Angeles, CA, and enjoys traveling, bike riding, playing tennis, attending church, and spending quality time with family and friends.

Bryan L. is a dedicated professional whose journey as an immigrant from Mexico and upbringing in the Bronx have instilled in him a strong sense of community and perseverance. With experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant and Certified Pharmacy Technician, Bryan brings a background in healthcare that reflects his compassion, attention to detail, and commitment to helping others.
His wide range of interests — from science and music to athletics — fuels his belief that learning happens everywhere. Bryan’s curiosity and hands-on mindset allow him to inspire students to explore, think critically, and discover their own strengths.

I will receive my Master’s of Science in Teaching from SUNY Plattsburgh. I have been teaching Elementary School since 2021. Hi! My name is Christina Leone, and I’m excited to begin my second year at Elm Community Charter School and my seventh year teaching at the elementary level. Over the years, I have
taught a variety of grades and subjects, including two years of science, one year in second grade, and four years in first grade. This year, I’m thrilled to return to second grade, where I look
forward to fostering curiosity, confidence, and a love for learning in my students. I earned my degree from the University of Rhode Island, where I majored in Psychology and
minored in Elementary Education. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, and I love going on adventures with my dog, Luna.

Renee has more than 20 years of experience in math and science education and a passion for inquiry-based learning. This gives her a unique skill set to seamlessly integrate STEM into the curriculum. She started her career in Valley Stream’s School District 13, where she served as a classroom teacher, science specialist, and district math coordinator. Renee continued to deepen her teaching, coaching, and leadership skills at The School at Columbia, an independent school affiliated with Columbia University. During the school year, she was The School’s math liaison, and she spent her summers writing science curriculum and teaching at the Hollingworth Science Camp, which is affiliated with Teachers College. Since 2015, Renee has been working in coaching and leadership positions for education consulting companies. She served as Chief Operating Officer for Metamorphosis and co-founder and COO of Reimagined Teaching. Renee has a master’s in STEM for elementary education from Hofstra University and a BA from Villanova University.

Emily Rodriguez is passionate about creating schools that inspire curiosity and foster a love of learning in all students. With over 20 years of experience in K-12 education, Emily has served as a teacher, founding principal, and district-level leader, gaining a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in public education, particularly in innovative and mission-driven school environments. Emily is currently an Associate Director at Harvard Business School’s Social Enterprise Initiative, where she focuses on connecting and supporting alumni who are working to create positive, systemic change in education and other sectors. Emily holds a BA from the University of Miami and master’s degrees from Queens College and Pace University. She lives outside of Boston, MA, with her husband and three children.

My name is Rebecca Quagliariello, and I am a proud lifelong resident of Queens, NYC. Throughout my life, teaching and working with children has been not only a profession but a deep passion and integral part of who I am.
I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Child Study from St. Joseph’s College, as well as a Master’s Degree in Childhood General and Special Education from Touro University. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with students across a broad range of grade levels, from Preschool through 8th grade.

Noshin’s passion for education was ignited early in life as the eldest sibling and one of the oldest cousins in a large family. This experience instilled in her a desire to nurture and guide younger students, leading her to realize her true calling in the classroom. Currently, Noshin holds dual Bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and International Relations from The City College of New York and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education at CUNY Hunter College. As a first-generation immigrant, I believe deeply that every child has the right to a great education. Now committed to giving back to the Elm Community, Journey brings her dedication to empowering students through equal access to quality education. As a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Journey embodies the values of scholarship and service in all aspects of her work. Her mission is to address educational disparities and ensure every student receives a meaningful and impactful learning experience. Vanessa Lugo Rippee holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies and Political Science from UCLA and a Master of Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education. She began her career in Denver, Colorado, as a Pre-K teacher and Community Relations/International Schools Coordinator. In 2015, Vanessa earned an M.A. in Educational Leadership and Management from Teachers College, Columbia University, eventually serving as a School Leader.

As an education leader, Vanessa brings extensive experience in professional learning, curriculum development, and consultancy. She excels at implementing educational programs on various scales, using data insights and adult learning principles to craft strategies tailored to client needs. With a focus on equitable practices and trust-building, Vanessa collaborates with stakeholders to drive positive outcomes and improve implementation metrics.

Vanessa’s dedication to inclusivity and innovation extends globally. She has presented on pedagogical innovations at prestigious events such as the Partnership for Global Learning and the Asia Society. Recognized as a Champion of Change by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, Vanessa’s passion for educational equity and transformational change continues to influence her work, impacting communities and educational systems worldwide.

I was born in Alexandria, Egypt, and moved to Queens, Rego Park at the age of six—right near where Elm Community Charter School now stands. As someone who learned English with the support of dedicated teachers, I know firsthand the difference a caring school community can make. I’m proud to be the first woman in my family to break barriers in education, earning a triple bachelor’s degree in Economics, Law, and Political Science, followed by a Master’s in International Affairs and Global History from the University at Albany. I also have experience working with the United Nations Capital Development Fund, helping advance education globally and pursuing my passion to support students in Egypt. My own journey inspires my commitment to helping every student believe in themselves, dream big, and achieve their goals.

Director of Literacy

Dorca Casseus is an experienced educator and literacy leader who joins Elm Community Charter School as the Director of Literacy. A Brooklyn native, Dorca brings over 15 years of experience as a teacher, coach, and network leader. She began her career as an elementary classroom teacher and later served in various roles including Reading Interventionist, Literacy Coach, and Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Most recently, Dorca oversaw the literacy vision and programming across four schools in two states, supporting academic deans and school leaders to strengthen instruction and raise student achievement. Her leadership is grounded in the belief that literacy is a powerful tool for equity and self-expression. Throughout her career, she has developed culturally responsive curriculum, designed network-wide professional development, and coached educators in evidence-based practices aligned to the science of reading. Dorca holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the Macaulay Honors College at Brooklyn College and a Master of Education in Childhood Education from Hunter College. She is a National Board Certified Teacher in Literacy and holds New York State certification as a School Building and District Leader. Dorca is excited to join the Elm team and continue advocating for high-quality, joyful, and rigorous literacy instruction for all students.

Diana Diaconescu brings over a decade of management expertise to her role as Human Resources Manager at Elm Community Charter School. Originally from Romania, Diana has been a proud resident of Queens for the past 20 years, cultivating a deep connection to her community. With a proven track record in creating workplace cultures where employees can thrive, Diana is dedicated to fostering environments that align organizational goals with employee well-being. She excels in balancing compliance with compassion, designing robust policies, advancing talent development, and streamlining processes to deliver impactful results. My name is Deron Morton. I’m an educator from Astoria, Queens, and I’ve had the opportunity to teach at Central Queens Academy, where I worked closely with ENL (English as a New Language) learners. I love being active and competitive. I’m a big basketball and baseball fan, and I enjoy working out regularly. Whether in the classroom or at the gym, I bring focus, dedication, and a positive mindset to everything I do.

Mrs. Deonne Walcott is a dedicated educator, loving wife, and proud mom who brings both heart and skill into her classroom. She began her educational journey as a paraprofessional, where she quickly discovered her passion for helping students grow academically and personally. Driven by a desire to make a lasting difference, Mrs. Walcott earned her degree in education and transitioned into a full-time teaching role. Over the years, she has taught K–5 in a 12:1:1 setting and Middle School ELA, always striving to create a learning environment that is engaging, supportive, and filled with high expectations. Her teaching philosophy centers on the belief that every child has unique strengths and that learning should be both challenging and joyful. She incorporates hands-on activities, real-life connections, and plenty of encouragement to help her students succeed. Carissa Herrera is a passionate and dedicated educator who values nurturing a student’s curiosity and interests. She firmly believes that all children are competent and that learning should be approached with a child-centered perspective. She is a Queens native and is committed to working with students in her community. Carissa holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Education from Wesleyan University. She is currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree and dual certification in Early Childhood Education and Special Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, with a prospective graduation date in Spring 2026.

Media Lab Teacher

Amanda Lowell is so excited to be the new Media Lab Teacher for the 2024 – 2025 school year. Amanda is entering her 5th year of teaching in elementary charter schools. She hopes that by the end of the year, her students will be able to use the technology around them in a smart and responsible way. Amanda holds a BA in Geography at Rutgers University – New Brunswick and a Master’s in Early Childhood Education from Touro University. She loves reading nonfiction, mystery, and romance books. When Amanda is not at work she likes taking long walks in Central Park, going to the gym, hanging out with friends, and watching TV and movies.

Hello everyone! My name is Ms. Avila, I graduated from Medgar Evers College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. My passion for education started when I wanted to be a representation that I did not see in my K-12 experience. My teaching philosophy is that every student can succeed with the right encouragement and being held to high expectations because they can achieve any goal(s) they desire! I believe in creating a safe learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and push their thinking. As a teacher, I encourage problem-solving. My goal as a teacher is to cater to different learning styles and allow my students to thrive in and outside of the classroom. I have experience working with students since 2021. I have worked with various grades from K-4 and middle school students as well teaching science classes. I also have experience working in general education, ICT, and ELL classes.

My name is Melissa Hotaling and I am thrilled to continue my teaching journey as a member of Elm Community Charter school! I graduated from (CUNY) Queens College with a BA in English Literature and an MAT in Childhood Education. I hold a dual NYS certification to teach B-2 and 1-6. I’ve taught in the preschool classroom and am looking forward to teaching in an elementary school setting. I enjoy instilling in students the ability to think critically and to ask probing questions about their world. I recently co-authored a peer-reviewed article based on a critical literacy exploration of graffiti in the classroom with my students that was published in The English Record. I enjoy pedagogical research and hope to engage my new students in more hands-on critical literacy projects in the near future. When I am not teaching, I enjoy having fun with my 3 year-old daughter, singing and playing guitar in my classic rock band, and yoga!

My name is Marie-Anne Pierresaint, I was born and raised in Long Island, NY. I’ve got a real passion for teaching and working with kids, it’s been a part of my life since I was just 16!

After earning my Bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education from Buffalo State University, I started my teaching journey with third graders. But you know what? I found my true calling in math, so I made the switch to become a middle school math teacher. It was rewarding, but I missed the energy of the little ones.

So here I am, back in elementary school, and I couldn’t be more excited! I’m all about igniting that spark of curiosity in kindergartners and watching it grow as they explore the world around them.

Teaching isn’t just a job for me.. it’s my passion. And I’m here to make a positive impact on every kiddo who walks through those classroom doors. Let’s learn and grow together!

Kyla Chirico is a motivated and passionate teacher with a heart for students with special needs. She is a Teach for America alumn who received her Masters in Education from Pace University in NYC. She received her undergraduate degree from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University. When not in the classroom, Kyla has been mentoring and assisting refugee families who have recently arrived in the United States. She lives with her husband and four sons in Carmel, Indiana and loves to plant flowers, play tennis and spend time outdoors.

Pamela Chin is a native Queens, NY resident and an enthusiastic educator who is passionate about helping students find their potential as well as providing more equitable educational opportunities for all. Pamela has taught in the Bronx and Queens for over a decade. She currently serves on the Instructional Leadership Team in a public school in Corona, Queens. Pamela holds a Masters of Science in Adolescent Education from St. John’s University and a Masters of Arts in Teaching Biological Sciences from Miami University.

Development Committee Chair

Derian De La Torre is the Senior Director of Finance and Operations at the Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health and Science Charter School, an independent charter school serving the South Bronx. He began his career in finance as credit analyst for a boutique investment firm. However, shortly after he shifted into education finance as he began consulting for charter schools in New York State with EdTec. After working with multiple schools, he settled down at the Dr. Izquierdo CS where he is responsible for overseeing all non-instructional departments and functions. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Hamilton College. He is a longtime Brooklyn native and outside of his professional career he has begun to invest in real estate in his own community.

My name is Yamel Hernandez. I was born and raised in Harlem and now reside in Queens. I have a bachelor’s degree in Human Relations with a minor in communication and media from the CUNY School of Professional Studies.

I am eager to use my experience and management skills as I learned as a Human Relations student to promote a cohesive learning environment for Elm students. I strongly believe in community and the wonders that can happen when people work together for a more significant cause.

Jennifer Matos graduated with her B.A. from The College of the Holy Cross, where she studied Spanish. She then went off to work as a Case Manager for APS where she was able to learn how to provide support to one of the most at risk populations in her community. She then went on to work at her alma mater, Cristo Rey High School, where she was able to provide guidance and support to high school students entering the workforce for the first time. Jennifer is excited to be joining the Elm Community Charter School as an Operations Associate and seeing ways in which she can be engaged with the community. Jennifer enjoys being of service to her community and is looking forward to being inspired by those who work for and with Elm Community Charter School.

I’m a passionate educator with a heart for serving diverse communities, particularly in the vibrant borough of Brooklyn, New York. With over eight years of experience in the field of education, I’ve dedicated myself to supporting bilingual and new language learners, as well as students with special educational needs.

My journey in education began in the bustling classrooms of Brooklyn, where I discovered my calling to make a difference in the lives of students from all walks of life. As a graduate of both Brooklyn College and Columbia University, I hold a master’s degree in School Building Leadership, equipping me with the knowledge and skills to lead with compassion and competence.

Director of STEM

Dara Greenidge is an educational leader who is ecstatic to support learners, families, teachers and staff through joining the Elm Community Charter School team as the Director of STEM. She began her career as a charter school teacher in Harlem and Brooklyn, gaining experience in Grades K – 3. Her leadership journey commenced as she became a Grade Team Leader, Labsite Teacher, and Behavioral/Instructional Coach. Through engaging in this work, she grew a passion for providing professional development and supporting teachers with responding to the academic and social-emotional needs of their students. Dara has also served as a Dean of Instruction and Math Instructional Coach within charter school settings. Most recently, she assumed the role of Assistant Principal and District Math Coach across three public schools on Long Island. Dara received a Master of Arts in Teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from New York University. She is fully committed to ensuring that all students have access to the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to become productive contributors to our society and world at large.

Sherwin Dowell is a Brooklyn-bred Jamaican-American who was raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn. He received his bachelors in Economics from CUNY Queen’s College in 2020, and later enlisted into the US NAVY Reserves in 2023. Sherwin Dowell loves sports, anime, traveling and music. Sherwin is excited to be a resource that others can learn from and teach to.

Kayla Terry is excited to join the Elm Community for the 2024-2025 school year! Kayla was born and raised in Queens. She graduated from SUNY Albany with a Bachelors in Human Development. She is obtaining her Masters degree from Touro College in Childhood Education and Special Education Grades 1-6. Growing up, Kayla has seen firsthand the inequalities within the education system, fueling her passion to be an educator. She is passionate about creating an inclusive and diverse learning environment where all students can thrive and loves watching her students grow throughout the year. She is excited to continue her journey as an educator at Elm, building strong relationships with students, parents, and colleagues to support the holistic development of each learner.

I am a Brooklyn native who saw firsthand the disparity in our education system, and how challenging it can be attending school in a large city, especially NYC. The unique challenges I experienced growing up inspired me to give back to the community by stoking the same love of learning in others that my teachers did for me. I attended Syracuse University, where I earned a Dual BA in English and Textual Studies with a concentration in Creative Writing and TV/Radio/Film. I have a passion for storytelling, media, and technology, and aim to bring my knowledge of technical and creative pursuits to enrich the Elm Community.

Hi! My name is Zeleena Khan and I am so excited to join the Elm Community. I am a Queens native born and raised in Flushing and currently residing in Forest Hills. I have been teaching for over 15 years with experience in both Pre-K and Kindergarten. I received my Bachelor’s degree from York College (CUNY) in Elementary Education and my Master’s degree from Hunter College (CUNY) in Literacy Education. I believe in fostering a positive community of learners who can advocate for themselves and motivate them to become changemakers for their community.

Kenia Manon is passionate about student education and school based operations. Kenia joins Elm Community with eight years of experience in School based Operations from New Visions For Public Schools and Ascend Public Charter Schools. Kenia was born and raised in Brooklyn and Queens attended Queens College, and currently holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. She comes from an immigrant family and is the first to graduate college. Kenia’s passion for quality education stems from attending NYC public schools her entire life and identifying the disconnect in urban communities. Her goal is to ensure that she makes a difference by being part of the change, closing any gaps and providing students with the proper resources in their education, so that they are prepared for the future. Kenia is happy to call Elm Community Charter School her new home where she can better serve learners.

Alan Malamud is an energetic, empathetic, and driven educator originally from Tokyo, Japan. He moved to the United States to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and ultimately graduated with a BA in Political Science from Boston University. Following graduation, he moved to Washington D.C. to begin his teaching career and pursue his MS in Education from Johns Hopkins University. Mr. Malamud relocated to the New York area in 2023 and in his free time loves spending time with his partner, their two cats and their friends. Having taught in several countries and situations, Mr. Malamud brings a diverse set of skills to relate to students and their needs. He is excited to join the Elm community and meet the awesome students and families!

Julia Rose is a 4th year teacher who has just moved from Baltimore, MD. Julia is very excited to join our school community and can’t wait to start teaching and making connections with her students! She has an undergraduate degree from Loyola University Maryland and is a Graduate student at Towson University. Ms. Rose loves to talk with her students and create engaging lessons that make her students love to learn as much as she loves to teach.

I was born and raised in New York, Queens. I completed my Bachelor Degree in Political Science and Master’s Degree in Childhood Education grades 1-6. I come from a family of immigrants who came to the USA and taught me what hard work creates. I love to draw, paint and go on hikes and can speak three languages (English, Bengali and a little bit of Spanish). I believe that education is the most valuable thing a person can own, therefore I teach and treat education like the most valuable thing in the world.

Hello! My name is Tracy Boerum and I am so excited to be part of the Elm Community team! I was born and raised on Long Island, and am the mom to two teenagers and two labrador retrievers! I completed my degree at Hofstra University, with a degree in Psychology and a concentration in childhood/adolescent psychology. I have always loved teaching and started my career working for a major cosmetic company in their education and development department. I was so lucky and was able to travel around the world educating staff and creating curriculum. I soon realized my true passion for teaching was in a classroom with children. I’ve worked for the past several years in an elementary school, and spent time in classrooms, from pre k to 6 grade. I love being a teacher, and take great joy in seeing children progress both academically and non-academically as well rounded people and future leaders of their community! Nothing makes me happier than seeing a child’s eyes light up after grasping a new piece of knowledge.

Hello, my name is Jenny Beras. I have been teaching for over 8 years. I always wanted to be a teacher, even when I was young. I always enjoyed helping others learn and grow. As an undergraduate, I received a Bachelor of Arts in Latin American Studies and a Minor in Education and a Master’s degree in Science in Education-ENL. My objective is to create an excellent learning environment at Elm Community Charter School and offer a helping hand to those in need.

Angelica Parciak was born in Brooklyn and is a first generation American. Her parents immigrated from Poland when they were young adults and always instilled the value of a quality education. Angelica is a dedicated educator who obtained her Masters degree in Early Childhood and Special Education. She has been in the field of education for 6 years. Angelica believes that every child is unique but every child can learn. She aspires to cultivate a classroom that is supportive, engaging, and full of learning.

Katherine (Kate) Bacani is excited to join the Elm Community CS family. She lived in Elmhurst as a baby before moving to Long Island, where she currently still lives. She has 14 years experience in charter schools, working with students in grades K-8 in various roles. She has also lead 100th Day of School, Math Month, and Awards Day celebrations. Kate has a Bachelor’s in Inclusive Childhood Education, with a minor in mathematics and her Master’s in Early Childhood Education. She is excited to bring her knowledge and passion back to the community she came from!

Eva is very excited to be part of the Elm Community Team! She is returning to Art education after working the past 7 years as Mandarin language consultant in middle high school, and as lead teacher in various styled preschool in Long Island and New York City. She has a B.A. in Fine Arts from Sichuan Fine Art Institute in China, and a M.A. in Childhood Education from Queens College. Through years of teaching, she has promoted the important role that creativity plays in learning. She likes to expose students to a variety of different art materials and introduce them to diverse artworks by artists from all around the world and throughout history.

Ying Gao was born in China and immigrated to New York with her family when she was 15 years old. She graduated from Queens College with a master’s degree in childhood education. Ying believes every child has infinite potential to succeed in various areas; they all deserve a teacher who can build a strong connection, understand their strengths, and insist that they can be whomever they want. Before joining the Elm Community, Ying was a substitute teacher at New York public schools teaching K-5th grade. She also volunteered as a Sunday school teacher at a Catholic church for four years. Ying is excited to be a teacher at Elm Community charter school; she can’t wait to start her new teaching journey.

I am extremely excited to be joining the Elm Community Charter School. I was born and raised in New York. I am passionate about teaching and believe that there isn’t a “one size fits all” educational approach. Every child learns differently. I hope to create a classroom environment where students can take control of their own learning. I will provide them with the tools and do my best to support them to be successful academically and socially. I graduated from Hunter College with a Bachelor’s in Childhood Education and Psychology. I am currently pursuing my Master’s in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

My name is Sophia Christos Panagiotopoulos, or Ms. P for short. I am half Greek, half Egyptian speaking both Greek and Arabic. I was born and raised in Queens, New York. I lived in New Orleans for four years, where I completed my undergraduate degree at Loyola University. I have worked in schools all over NYC and quickly realized I belong in a classroom. Currently, I am in a graduate program pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. Outside of work and school, you can find me tending to my plants or playing with my two cats.

My name is Shameeza Haraish. I am from Queens NY. I hold a Bachelor’s degree of Science and Elementary Education from Grand Canyon University. I hold a Master’s degree of Master of Education with a Specialization in English as a Second Language from Northcentral University. I have been in the education system for 6 years. I have taught grades Pre-k- 6 as a long-term substitute at public school 108 for four and a half years. I have taught Pre-K as a permanent teacher for one and a half year.

My dream of becoming a teacher started ever since I was in Elementary school. I looked up to my teachers especially my fifth and sixth grade teachers. My teachers were always willing to help me with any subject that I was having trouble with by sitting with me one- on-one to make sure that I was able to comprehend to the best of my ability. I always used to say that I want to be like my teachers, helpful, caring, considerate, and understanding.

I have a true passion for working with young learners. I strive to build lasting relationships with my students and being able to see them become lifelong learners. As a teacher, I can positively influence a child’s way of thinking by helping them see the positive aspects of learning. I am always very eager to help students build self- esteem and believe in themselves and their ability to learn. I learned throughout the years that every child learns differently and as an educator I strive to help each child learn in the best possible way that fits them best.

Ms. Seo is returning back to the United States after five years of experience as a second grade homeroom teacher at an international school in South Korea. She spent the majority of her life in the west coast where she majored in early childhood and family studies and with a minor in anthropology at the University of Washington, Seattle. She currently holds a teaching certification in early childhood PreK – 3 and grades K-6. Ms. Seo firmly believes in children’s innate drive to learn and wants to provide a supportive environment that fosters motivation, independence, and responsibility so that every child can have the chance to expand their capabilities and build a sense of pride as lifelong learners.

Hi! I’m Jeremy Levine and I am so pleased to be joining the Elm Community Charter School family. I have been working with children since 2004. I was always told that I would make a great teacher, so I went for it and have now been teaching for almost 10 years. I think it’s imperative that learning is as engaging as possible and I love making my lessons fun and entertaining. When I’m not teaching, you can find me watching movies, listening to music or enjoying a good Yankees game!

Jenny Tapia cannot wait to start her journey as part of the Elm Community Team! She was born and raised in Corona, Queens and currently resides in Elmhurst. One of her greatest passions is being able to give back to the community that helped shape the person she is now. Her hope is that she can inspire and motivate students to believe that they are capable of whatever goals they set for themselves. She believes children can thrive and learn in a classroom environment where they are supported, feel safe and are encouraged to constantly grow.
Jenny graduated from Queens College with a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and has a license in Childhood Education Grades 1-6. She also has a bachelor’s degree in Sociology.

Jennifer is looking forward to starting her teaching journey at Elm! As an Elmhurst native, Jennifer is familiar with the community that shapes this incredible district. Jennifer is a recent graduate of Hunter College’s School of Education. She will be working towards her MA within the coming years. Through her experiences as an educational tutor and student teacher, Jennifer has solidified her passion of teaching as a lasting and fulfilling career. Jennifer is eager to learn; and, she understands learning occurs best when collaboration is involved. Therefore, Jennifer anticipates being a team player in order to build meaningful rapport with those around her.

Haley Ramirez is a licensed School Counselor thrilled to be joining the Elm Community Charter School team! Passionate about supporting each student’s overall development and realization of full potential, Haley has served as a School Counselor since 2015 in both public and private schools in Kansas, Georgia, and New York. Haley holds a Masters in Counseling and Student Development from Kansas State University. Now calling Corona, Queens home, Haley remains passionate about her hometown Kansas City sports teams and barbecue while also enjoying the rich culture, flavors, and experiences found in Queens. In her free time, Haley can usually be found spending time with her family, trying a new recipe, or getting active on a basketball court or soccer field.

Gina Spriggs is a passionate and enthusiastic educator who is dedicated to enriching and developing the minds of children. She creates an engaging and nurturing classroom that builds community and a love for learning. She finds joy in helping children meet their goals, and empowers children to become advocates for themselves and others. She believes in strengthening childrens’ social-emotional and academic skills, creating an environment where children are excited to learn, and integrating fun back into education. Gina is honored to bring eleven years of early childhood education experience to the Elm community. She holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Towson University, in addition to a Bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences from Morgan State University.

Hi, my name is Fareeza Haraish and I am so excited to be part of this wonderful school family! I was born and raised in Queens, New York. I went to my local high school, John Adams where I had the privilege to join the Fire Department Recruitment Program. My teacher for the program had a positive impact on me and I learned to love her teaching skills. My dreams to become a firefighter had changed and my passion for teaching ignited.

I soon went off to college and earned my bachelors for special and general education at Grand Canyon University. I had the honor to work as a substitute teacher for a variety of schools and grades. During my years as a substitute teacher I decided to go back to Grand Canyon University and I earned my Masters in Elementary Education. I then became a pre-k teacher and had been teaching pre-k for two years. When I teach my students I always teach from my heart. I love getting to watch my students grow and blossom through the year. I love watching their personalities develop and getting to know each and one of my kids for exactly who they are. I am ready to make a difference in the classroom, create engaging lessons and differentiate learning so that my students can enjoy learning. Nothing fills my heart more than seeing a child`s eyes light up when they finally comprehend something that they have been struggling with. I am confident that this year will be a year of diverse learning, and most of all joy and laughter’s!

Erika Williams earned her Bachelor’s in English from Ohio University and her Master of Arts in Teaching from American University. She is passionate about teaching and enjoys watching the joy and curiosity of her students. She is focused on creating an inclusive and diverse classroom and ensuring all students feel at home. Though originally from Athens, OH, Erika recently moved to New York from Richmond, VA, where she taught in various preschool classrooms and worked as a 4th grade teacher for the public school system. While doing so, she also tutored and served as her school’s History and Social Science Instructional Lead. In her free time, Ms. Williams likes to crochet, read, and do yoga. She is so excited to join Elm Community Charter for the 2022-23 school year!

He is a Queens native who fell in love with education at the age of 14. With 10+ years of experience in education, he shows a great deal of knowledge in pedagogical practice, and always loves to learn, not only from his fellow educators, but from his students. He hopes that one day, he can use his expertise and knowledge of education to become an educational leader or even opening his own school. Hello! My name is Catherine Nieves and I have been dedicated to working with children since I was a teenager. I always believe that a classroom is like a second home for my students and it’s important to recognize each and every one of my students to their fullest potential all while having the most fun possible. I hold my initial NYS teaching certification grades 1-6. I graduated from Queens College (CUNY) with my BA in Elementary Education (Grades 1-6) and English Literature. I also practice ABA therapy. I am actively pursuing my master’s in special education at Queens College. This upcoming year will be my third-year teaching and I am beyond excited to see what my students can create!

I’m thrilled to start a new journey at Elm! For the past four years, I’ve taught a 2nd-grade class in Philadelphia. I’ve also experienced with various children ages from infant to elementary grade level for about ten years. It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential to be creative that each child is a unique individual by providing an environment that is positive, and supports social-emotional where they could enjoy learning. I also believe as an educator, it is my job to help students find a sense of purpose in their lives through education. Hi! My name is Tehya Stovall and I am a Southern Belle making her way along the East Coast. Being born and raised in Memphis, TN, I have had a lot of experience of representation lacking between my colleagues and my admin. teams as well. As I begun my initial years of being an educator, I have throughly enjoyed learning the different aspects of becoming a lifelong learner within myself. Ensuring that each student that touches a seat in my classroom has the feeling of safety in their learning experience by way of remaining transparent in my efforts as their educator will remain key in my teaching philosophy and also as I mold my impact here at Elm. Providing my students, and my colleague, this safe space for growth demonstrates realistic expectations for myself and my students which in return demonstrates to my students that their learning will be a lifelong stair-step of knowledge that they obtain each year building onto them each year to follow. I am confident in my efforts toward a well-rounded community as well as the well-rounded students that I will be releasing into society and I am so elated to start my journey with Elm Charter Community School.

Leon Ramotar firmly affirms that an educational space should be warm, inclusive, community-minded, rigorous and a child-centered space that supports each learner—and the community at large. I embody an inclusive, anti-racist, culturally reponsive approach while presuming competence in all learners. Listening directly to the heartbeats of our children through cultivating, supporting, and nurturing each body and mind in the community to fully develop is at the—core—of my tenets. In tandem with other lines of development, there is a surge of awakening of the whole child—which I seek to fully embody at Elm Community Charter Schools by always putting students first. As a lifelong learner, Leon seeks to inquire, imagine and create learning experiences that stimulate engagement and tailor for the needs of all learners. Leon has served as a Head Teacher, Grade Team Leader and Teacher Leader Fellow in elementary education in the charter sector. Leon holds a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology & Special Honors Curriculum from Hunter College, City University of New York (CUNY) where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and Master of Arts in Elementary Inclusive Education with a Gifted Extension from Teachers College, Columbia University. Leon was a proud graduate from the Teacher Opportunity Corps (TOC II) at Teachers College, Columbia University where teachers of color support underrepresented students.

Shanshan Xiao is currently an early childhood teacher in Queens, NY who loves to work with children, providing them with an interactive and hands- on exploration through all classroom activities and lessons. She has been teaching for the past 3 years designing full years of curriculum and lesson plans. She has also developed a virtual on demand English and Math learning video with “The World Book” with over 1,000 students learning alongside Shanshan’s course which spans to over 2 months and daily class enrichment. Shanshan has also been singing professionally for more than 10 years, performing in venues and concerts such as Lincoln center and Carnegie Hall for thousands of audiences. She hopes to combine her extensive musical background and teaching together to engage young children.

Librarian and Media Specialist

Terri is elated to be joining the Elm Community Team! She is returning to education after devoting the past 7 years to working in animal welfare and the veterinary medicine field. Terri has 14 years experience as a classroom teacher and Library Media Specialist for various schools in the NYC Department of Education. She hopes to bring her love of inquiry, research, and animals to her students! She has a B.A. in Elementary Education from Hunter College, a M.A. in Sociology and Education from Teachers College, a Masters in Library Science from Queens College, and a M.S. in Animals and Public Policy from Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine.

Bianca Agron is super excited to be joining the Elm Community Charter Family this year! Bianca obtained a BA in Psychology with a concentration in child development and continued her studies in Early childhood and Early Special Education receiving her Master’s Degree from Grand Canyon University. Her educational philosophy is that all children are unique and learn in their own distinctive ways and educators need to provide each student with an environment where they are able to grow academically as well as: physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. It is her mission to create this type of setting while using modifications that will meet every student’s needs and give them the opportunity to meet their full potential. Sports & Movement Teacher

Joshua Silverberg went to Queens College for my BA in Physical Education and is ready to bring all his creative fun ideas to Elm. Our goal in Sports and Movement is for everyone to learn to make healthy choices and feel successful when participating in a variety of activities. This enables students to develop a positive attitude toward physical activity and healthy habits, which will hopefully continue throughout their lives.

Nadia is extremely excited to join the Elm Team. She loves to encourage students to be the best that they can be by putting a plan together that targets their long term goals by focusing on accomplishing immediate short term goals. Nadia strongly believes that knowledge is power, so the more you know the further you can go; and this applies to every aspect of a persons life. She brings more than ten years of early childhood classroom experience from Pre-K to first grade.
